All About Diabetes

The medical name of diabetes is Diabetes Mellitus. It refers to a group of

metabolic diseases that have to do with the way the body makes or uses

blood sugar. The disease is characterized by two conditions:

  1. Inadequate production of insulin

  2. The body loses the capability of responding to the insulin that is produced.

The condition in which the body fails to produce insulin or does not produce as much of it as is required is known as Type 1 diabetes. This is also known as insulin dependent diabetes as it requires insulin to be injected.

Insulin resistance or the inability of the body cells to use insulin the way they should is known as Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes may sometimes be combined with insulin deficiency as well. A third type is known as gestational diabetes, a condition in which a pregnant women who has never had diabetes before, shows signs of diabetes, such as high blood sugar during pregnancy. In certain cases this may eventually lead to development of Type 2 diabetes.Regardless of the type, diabetes produces classical symptoms, including frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. Other symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing sores. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are chronic diseases and cannot be usually cured. However most patients can manage the disease through the control of blood sugar Type 2 diabetes has long been treatable with medications and Type 1 became treatable in 1921 when insulin became available. However, adherence to a diabetic diet remains the mainstay of diabetes treatment. Diabetes is exhaustively covered on the Internet.
